Exclusive Interview

We talk with jazz artist, Mark Durant!

How has the Denver jazz scene, past and present, shaped your sound and approach to music? I am always working for new sounds and diversity in my music as I do not wish to sound like anybody else locally or internationally.

Who were some of your earliest jazz influences, and do you remember the first jazz album that really grabbed your attention? First Jazz album would be Miles Davis Kind Of Blue. Influences would be Al Dimeola, Jeff Beck, Norman Brown and of course Miles Davis.

Many jazz musicians are constantly exploring new ground. What musical areas or techniques are you currently focused on developing? I have been attempting to implement techno and industrial into my music.

Can you describe your typical songwriting or composing process? Where do you typically find inspiration for your pieces? Inspiration is found in many places and are found on many media outlets by just hearing a phrase or conversations. Developing a song is started by working music theory and developing chord progressions.

What's the most challenging aspect of being a musician in today's music industry? Jazz has been waning in popularity for a number of years and challenges are developing a fan base and getting your music heard.

What's been your most memorable performance experience, and why? One night at the end of a show I received flowers which validated that the band and show was spot on.

How important is collaboration to you as an artist, and are there any musicians you're particularly hoping to work with in the future? Collaboration is a good thing as other musicians can give you a different perspective from tempo to enhancement to a particular song. Unfortunately, most of the people I would love to collaborate with are deceased.

What advice would you give to young, aspiring jazz musicians trying to break into the scene? Best advice I would give is never give up. Quitters Never Win.

Beyond music, what are some of your other passions or hobbies that influence your creativity and overall well-being? I enjoy reading, listening to music, watching movies and taking care of my puppy Sophie.

What are you working on now, and what can fans expect from you in the coming months or year? Will begin work on a new album later this year for release in 2026.
