What is the music scene like in Texas?
The music scene in Texas has a rich musical heritage. Texas has long been a center for musical innovation. There are many venues to perform at and a lot of opportunities for new independent artist like myself.
At what age did you start getting into music professionally?
My mother was my role model growing up. We had a karaoke machine, and she would have me sing for the family often. I was never given professional voice lessons, but my mother taught me how to sing correctly.
At what point did you decide you wanted to try a career in music?
I started getting into music professionally at the age of 40 years old.
Is anyone else musical in your family?
What made you wait so long to release your debut album?
Yes, my cousin Jeffery Smith is an independent jazz artist and is doing well. My husband Willie Washington is a bass guitarist who actually played on several songs on the album. We have many gifted family members.
I believe there are seasons in our lives where certain things are meant to happen. Doing an album was not truly a desire for me because I was truly focused on developing my relationship with Christ. I remember an event that I attended in 2002. We were asked to write down our most outrageous dream in our journal. In 2009, I went through my journal and totally forgot that I wrote about wanting to do a Worship CD! That was considered an outrageous dream to me because I felt it would never happen.
What type of situations inspired you to write "God Knows"?
There were many things going on in my life at the time with my youngest daughter and family issues. I just began to write and "God Knows" just began to flow from my heart. God knows our situation and what we need. I can't specifically say what everyone needs but we all want love and peace. That is what "God Knows" truly speaks about our need for love and peace and especially when we can't sometimes express what we truly feel.
Is it hard juggling a family and a music career?
It is all about balance and communicating with your family. When you keep your priorities in order that is God first, family and career then everything else falls in place.
Where do you record?
I record at Audio Dallas Recording Studio in Garland,Texas with one of the best engineers, Matt Kennedy.
What type of music do you listen to in your private time?
In my private time I listen to Praise and Worship and a variety of music which include Gospel, Jazz, some R&B and the oldies.
Have you done any live shows lately?
Yes, I have done live shows at musical events hosted by different churches and special events at conferences.
What can we expect from you in the next year?
I will be hosting a show on the Internet Radio for new indie Gospel artists. Also, I will be working on a new gospel jazz album. We also have special projects we are planning.
